Upcoming LPN-to-RN Program Start Dates:

August 17, 2026 - Day Program (BSN)

(Application Deadline: Early Accept – March 12, 2026 Regular Accept - May 21, 2026) 

January 11, 2027 - Day (BSN) and Evening/Weekend (AAS) Program (Application Deadline: August 20, 2026)

The Riverside College of Health Sciences advanced placement option allows LPNs to advance into the Professional Nursing Program by entering as a level two student in either the BSN or AAS Professional Nursing. View our Nursing Program Philosophy.

Riverside is proud to offer:

  • A program leading to either a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Degree. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to apply to sit for the NCLEX-RN© (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses)
  • The Bachelor program is available as a full-time day option consisting of four 16-week semesters in addition to specific college-level prerequisite pre-admission courses - occasional evening or weekend hours may be required (2 academic years)
  • The associate degree option is a full-time Evening/Weekend schedule consisting of three 23- week semesters in addition to specific college-level prerequisite pre-admission courses - occasional day hours may be required (1.5 academic years)
  • Theoretical instruction integrated with laboratory simulations and clinical experience
  • Hands-on clinical experience in our modern medical center and a variety of affiliated clinical sites
  • Financial aid for students who qualify
  • Association with Riverside Health Career Planning services for current students and alumni

LPN-to-RN Requirements

  • Applicants must meet all admissions and general education course requirements of the Professional
    Nursing Program to which they are applying - AAS or BSN as applicable. See the Professional Nursing program page for pre- and corequisite course requirements
  • Applicants must have been employed as an LPN for at least one year within five years prior to
    application.
  • Applicants must achieve a minimum of 80% on a preadmission, faculty-prepared nursing content test.
  • Applicants must attend mandatory orientation session.
  • Validation of clinical competencies may be required at the discretion of the Program Director.
  • Applicants must be licensed to practice in Virginia or a licensure compact state. Proof of a current, unencumbered LPN license is required.
  • Accepted LPN-to-RN Advanced Placement (AP) students will be awarded 90 clinical hours and 17 semester credits (BSN), or 16 semester credits (AAS) for prior Practical Nursing education and current licensure.

 

Pre-Admission Testing Requirements

ATI TEAS Suggested Score: 66.1% or higher

Average Accepted TEAS Score: 74.6%

Skills Test: Achieve a minimum score of 80 percent on a faculty-prepared test based on the content of the first level courses of the Professional Nursing Program.

Validation of clinical competency in areas previously mastered may be required at the discretion of the Program Director.

 

Recommendations

Cumulative College-level GPA of 3.0 or better is recommended due to the competitive nature of admissions.

Average Accepted GPA: 3.20

Documentation of previous healthcare experience (including volunteer hours) is recommended.

  • The applicant must graduate from an accredited high school with a GPA of 2.0 or higher or have earned a high school equivalency (GED) certificate.
  • A cumulative College-level GPA of 3.0 or better is recommended due to the competitive nature of admissions.

RCHS Program Hours - Theory: 47.5 credit hours

RCHS Program Hours - Skills Lab: 4.5 credits

RCHS Program Hours - Clinical: 17 credit hours

Accepted BSN LPN-to-RN Advanced Placement (AP) students will be awarded 90 clinical hours and 17 semester credits (BSN) for prior Practical Nursing education and current licensure.

Program Summary - LPN-to-RN (AAS)

General Education Prerequisites: 22 credit hours

RCHS Program Hours - Theory: 33 credit hours

RCHS Program Hours - Skills Lab: 3.5 credits

RCHS Program Hours - Clinical: 14.5 credit hours

Accepted AAS LPN-to-RN Advanced Placement (AP) students will be awarded 90 clinical hours and 16 semester credits (AAS) for prior Practical Nursing education and current licensure.
